DPR Mid-June Club Update

Welcome to June’s mid-month club update. A lot to look forward to for the second half of the month – see below!

Summer League (1) – this Sunday
Our first Summer League fixture is upon us at Headstone Manor on Sunday. The Summer League is a series of friendly running races of either 5 miles or 10k hosted by different London running clubs – all are welcome and everyone who finishes contributes to our score, regardless of pace. It’s a great series to run in to track your time and improvement over the races. After the main race there will be a series of fun relays and children’s races, and an excellent picnic from the host club.

The race at Headstone Manor is a 9.30 start. The nearest station is North Harrow on the Metropolitan line – we suggest taking the Overground to Canada Water (07:33 or 07:48 departures from Forest Hill), then changing onto Jubilee and Metropolitan lines to get to North Harrow. The station is a 20 minute walk from the park. Please make sure you bring a water bottle and wear your club top!

More details about the Headstone Manor race are here.

Summer League (2) – DPR hosting on 9 July
The Summer League event we host is the biggest event of the club’s calendar, and this year it’s on 9 July. The event is a 5 mile race starting and finishing in Dulwich Park followed by a junior ‘Tenderfoot’ race, a children’s race and some relays. We are hosting seven other clubs so we need to pull out all the stops.

We need lots of volunteers to help make the event a success. We need the following volunteers:

  • Race timers;
  • Someone to video the finish;
  • A funnel manager;
  • Someone to hand out finish tokens;
  • A relay organiser;
  • A tail walker;
  • Volunteers to hand out water (children are great for this);
  • Someone to create mile markers;
  • Someone to put these up prior to the race and take them down afterwards;
  • Lots of marshals;
  • Someone to look after the food tent during the race;
  • A couple of people to supervise the food tent and hand out food and keep things tidy.
  • Some people willing to coordinate the above (e.g. race organisation, marshalling, marking the course, relays)
If you are willing to help please fill in the Google Spreadsheet or email David with the role you are willing to take on.

Plus: can you confirm you will bring some food. We have a hard-earned reputation as the club that provides the best picnic, so will need lots of contributions! More details will follow but please let us know whether you can help.

We will also need people to run the race too! Several of the roles above can be done by those running, but do please recruit family or friends to help out with tasks.

The main event starts at 9.30am, the children’s race,  ‘tenderfoot’ race and relays will take place from about 10.45.

If you can please arrive early to help set up and stay behind to help clear up. We want to leave that section of the park spotless by 12 noon. Perhaps some of us will celebrate afterwards with a drink in the pub

Wherever relevant please try to be environmentally friendly, minimising plastic waste in particular and if possible avoid using your car to travel to the event.

There is no need to bring water except any water you wish to carry round with you on the run. There will be a water station.

So once you’ve finished reading the newsletter please fill out the spreadsheet / send a message by WhatsApp or email to David   (chair@dulwichparkrunners.co.uk).

Summer League (3)
As well as the Headstone Manor and Dulwich events, we have three other Summer League events this summer – see below.

2 July – Perivale
30 July – Regent’s Park
13 August – Battersea Park

And if you haven’t already done so, please send an estimated 300m time to Susan – it really helps make sure we’re organised for the relays.

The Big Half – 3 September
Moving beyond the Summer League, our half marathon club championships this year will be at the Big Half on 3 September in central London. The race starts near Tower Bridge and finishes in Greenwich.

This is a great event to run a half-marathon. The course is over much of the London Marathon course and it is the same race organisers, so it has that same ‘big race’ feel, and is ideal for either a first half marathon or a PB. We’ve previously had a great turnout from DPR.

The club has been given a limited number of heavily discounted community places. If you’d like to be considered for one of these places, you must confirm your interest by Friday 23 June by emailing David at chair@dulwichparkrunners.co.uk. General entry places for the race are also available.

Dulwich Relays – next Wednesday
We had a strong turnout at the Dino Dash relays yesterday evening – full results to follow.

Our next relays appointment is in our own Dulwich Park, hosted by Dulwich Runners on Wednesday 21 June. We still have spaces, so if you’d like to take part please email IB Lilley at treasurer@dulwichparkrunners.co.uk.

Parkrun Ladder – starting on Saturday
The parkrun ladder returns on Saturday for its summer run – more details at the link below. It will run each Saturday until 9 September (excluding 8 July). All you need to do to participate is (if not already done) register with parkrun, set DPR as your club, and then run at any parkrun…and you’ll start climbing the ladder!

There will be bonus points each week as well as points for running – the first week’s bonus points are for a selfie (single or group) introducing yourself to the ladder on the DPR Facebook group.

One Mile Club Championships

Phew – that is a lot happening in June. But we are cramming in more running – our 1 mile club championships will be taking place on Tuesday 28 June. These will take place in the usual club run slot starting at 7.30pm; please wear your club top.

July events

And lastly a sneak peak into two events in July. We’re hosting an injury prevention talk by local physio Emma Hunter on the evening of 10 July. It should be a great session and help keep us all off the treatment table!

And we will have the return of our club BBQ and fun races on the club run night of 12 July – please do book it in the diary!
