DPR July Newsletter

Welcome to the July DPR newsletter! It was great to see everyone at Perivale for the Summer League yesterday – and please do come along for a big turnout next Sunday in Dulwich (more details below!)

Summer League at Dulwich Park (next Sunday)
We’re hosting our annual summer league event next Sunday. It is the biggest event the club runs with 200-300 participants from 9 running clubs – so we need lots of volunteers to make it a success!

There are 5 types of participation/help required:

1. Two more coordinators for:
a) the relays
b) the junior tenderfoot race and the toddlers race.

Please contact David on Whatsapp or via email (chair@dulwichparkrunners.co.uk) if you can help with this.

2.  General Volunteers:
  • 2 x Race timers (and for tenderfoot race)
  • A funnel manager
  • Someone to hand out finish tokens
  • A tail walker
  • a cyclist to ride in front of the race on the first lap
  • a cyclist to ride in front of the tenderfoot race
Contact Ib Lilley by email on treasurer@dulwichparkruners.co.uk or on Whatsapp.

3. Marshals. We will need lots of marshals – a perfect role for family and friends to get involved. We’re also looking for an additional person or two to help create mile markers and/or to mark out the course in advance, and to take down the mile markers afterwards.

Please contact James Hewlett on Whatsapp or email (comms@dulwichparkrunners.co.uk) with names.

4.  Everyone – Food! Look out for instructions from Di Suter. Bring along finger food. Savoury or sweet.

5. Setting up and clearing away. Please arrive early to help set up and/or stay on to the end to help clear away.

And lastly, runners! We also need people to run the race! Several of the roles above can be done by those running, but if you recruit family or friends to volunteer it will free you up to run and impress them with your sprint finish.

The event is a 5 mile race, starting and finishing in Dulwich Park. The event starts at 9.30am, the children’s race,  ‘tenderfoot’ race and relays will take place from about 10.45. Perhaps some of us will celebrate afterwards with a drink in the pub.

Wherever relevant please try to be environmentally friendly, minimising plastic waste in particular and if possible avoid using your car to travel to the event. There is no need to bring water except any water you wish to carry round with you on the run. There will be a water station.

Any queries please contact David, James or IB.

Big Half
This year’s half marathon club championships is The Big Half event in Central London on Sunday 3 September. It’s a great opportunity to enter a friendly ‘big race’ which takes in lots of landmarks; perfect for half marathon first timers or those looking for a PB.

The club received 10 community places this year costing £10 each, which have been allocated via a ballot to Anna Gregorowski, Clare Stephen, Jacque Kerr, Mark Schofield, Martha Brownlow, Rob Coles, Ronnie Patel, Shannan James, Susie Cooper and Tim Murray. If you were successful in the ballot, then we’ll contact you with next steps. Please let us know ASAP if you no longer intend to run in the race.

For those who don’t have a community place, the club is offering a further subsidy from club funds which will reduce the cost of entry to £36 (i.e. a £10 subsidy for those who benefit from local resident discount, £18 subsidy if not). This is good value for one of London’s marquee running events. You should enter ASAP via the link below, and the club subsidy will be refunded to you after the race.

More information and general entry to The Big Half is here.

Dulwich Dash
Back into this month – we’re once again dashing in Dulwich Park on Tuesday. It’s a 7.30pm start by the Rosebery Gate, and there will be drinks at a local hostelry afterwards.

Last month’s results are below – well done to Nina, who claimed a second win this year! Congratulations to Carlisle and Alicky who set some very impressive new fastest male and female times, and David who claimed a new fastest male age graded time.

Physio Talk – 10 July
A reminder that we have an exciting talk by local physio Emma Hunter on injury prevention – something we all have a big interest in! The talk is at 7.30pm at the Crown and Greyhound in the upstairs room.

Summer Barbeque – 11 July
The day after the physio talk is our summer barbeque. It’s always a fun evening – look out for more details on food arrangements etc.

One Mile Club Championships
Our one mile club championships took place on 27 June. Well done to Carlisle King, Nicole Teszke and Rosemary Harris who were first in the male, female and age-graded categories respectively. A further well run to Zach Bredemear, who broke the club age category record. Full results are here.

Following on from the one mile club championship results, a very big thank you to DPR members. The club tradition is to raise funds as part of the one mile championship. This year you helped raise over £160 for the club charity, the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers. That is more than double what we raised in 2022! Thank you.

June Racing Results
More racing results from June!

We had two relay events in June, starting with the fabulous Dino Dash on a lumpy course in Crystal Palace Park. We had six great teams participating, with team ‘Dulwich Park’ (Gabriel Hobro, Dominic Collard and James Hewlett) our fastest team. Full results here.

Our second relay was on home turf at the Dulwich Relays organised by Dulwich Runners. The course was flatter and the competition rapid, but our five teams put out a good showing with team ‘Dettori’ (Tim Murray, Dominic Collard and Amanda Larrington) leading us home. Full results are here.

There were more relays at our first Summer League fixture on 18 June at Headstone Manor – though this time as a digestif to the 5 mile main event (and the excellent picnic). We had a super turnout of 18 DPRers making the journey up to Harrow, and they were rewarded with what I’m told was a pleasant warm morning for running. Gabriel and Nicole were our first finishers in the hot conditions – full results here and more detail on the Summer League website.

Hot off the press, but thankfully cooler to actually run in, are our (provisional) results from yesterday’s Summer League fixture at Perivale. Zach and Rosemary were our first finishers this time around – see here for the full breakdown.

Tim (in the middle) looks to continue his successful relays form at Perivale yesterday

Parkrun Ladder
The parkrun ladder is continuing – see here for results after week 2 (24 June). Rachel Foley has opened up an early lead, but there’s a long way to go…

The ladder now takes a one-week break with all focus on the Summer League event on Sunday – back on 15 July.

April Committee Minutes
Lastly (and with apologies for the delay) a copy of the minutes from April’s committee meeting are available here.
