The local Christmas lights run planned for 27thDecember will no longer be happening.

Save the date – DPR Annual Dinner – Saturday 26 January 2019

The DPR event of 2019! Save the date and get a ticket early for DPR’s annual dinner at the clubhouse. Cost will be £10 (£5 for children up to 15 years old) and pays for Prosecco on arrival, wine for the table, and soft drinks. More information in the December newsletter, on the website and tickets will be on sale via DPR website.

Club Championship Races

The 2019 Half Marathon Club Championship Race will be Paddock Wood on Sunday 7th April. Entries are open now (only £23.00) and will undoubtedly sell out. This is a well organised flat race on roads in the Kent countryside which several club members have done before.  Visit for further information and to sign up.  Something to look forward to in the Spring!

The 2019 10 Mile Club Championship will be The Cabbage Patch 10 again. Obviously this is still a long way off but just to give you a heads up!

Club Championship Results

Congratulations to everyone on a very successful and well attended 5k Club Championship in Dulwich Park on Saturday 17th November.  It was really lovely to see so many of you including some of our ex-Beginners.  Congratulations to Will Simpson, our fastest finisher in 20.23. Also to our highest age-graders – Susan Smith with a stunning age-grading of 87.89%, Gillian Cavell with 79.29% and David Mullany with 74.58%.  Both David and Bernard Simmons have new Club Records in their age categories too.  Full results are on the website.

Non Club Event Race Recommendations

Sunday 6th January at 11.30am. Do sign up soon for the Tadworth 10 if you haven’t already – it’s a great way to start the New Year. It’s a 10 mile course described as challenging but scenic, a 50/50 mix of roads and trails across the Epsom Downs. £23 for affiliated entries.

If you’ve enjoyed an event in the past and think other members would too, please let the committee know and we’ll include it in future newsletters.

Ladies Cross Country

Well done to all 16 ladies who completed the muddy (but relatively flat!) second cross country fixture of the season in Nonsuch Park, it was great to see so many runners and several first timers.

There have been some changes to the remaining two fixtures with a cancellation and replacement on a different date so please make a note of the revised details as follows:

9th February @ 1pm – Richmond Park (Kingston end), 8km – CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

2nd March @ 11am – Lloyd Park, 8km

The fixture for 12th January has been cancelled and therefore the club championship race will now be on the 9th February.

The races are open to all female members and we always enjoy tea and homemade cake afterwards! You must wear club kit and we will co-ordinate travel arrangements nearer the time. More details will be sent out the week before each fixture. If you have any questions please email Emma on

Men’s Cross Country

A good turnout for the second men’s race at Beckenham Place Park. Despite the extra hills that were fitted in due to the works going on in the park a very enjoyable time was had by all, possibly helped by the free cake after the race!

We’re still looking for a fourth race for the men but we can confirm that one of races early in the New Year will be the ever fantastic Dash for the Splash! It will be held on 24 February 2019, starting at 9:30 on Wimbledon Common. A really great event that’s cheap (£14) and involves running through a brook in February, what’s not to like? Further details are on the race website:

As DPR men aren’t part of a cross-country league it means we go along to public entry trail races for our cross-country fix instead. This means that DPR ladies are very welcome to join us if you want to get in some extra trail running.

Finally, if anyone knows of any good, reasonably close by (and ideally cheap) trail runs early in the New Year please let Paul know as we’re always looking out for new fixtures.

Improvers Squad – Thursday Night Session December

If you’d like to get involved in the Improvers Squad for the sessions in December please sign up with Susan.  We’ll be concentrating on endurance in preparation for the longer winter races, and it’s a good grounding for anyone planning to start a marathon or half marathon schedule in the New Year. These are longer sessions so those already on the Squad as well as those thinking of joining really need to make sure that your monthly mileage is up to 18 miles minimum per week over three runs. If you have not quite reached this please chat with Susan anyhow if you are interested in taking part.

In order to get the best out of the sessions, members are asked to sign up for the whole month at a time (though ideally for the 2 months), with an opt-out by text if you are unable to come for one of the sessions, rather than the other way round!  The sessions will be arranged for, and advised to, those who have the intention to commit.  This means that each session can be adapted in advance to suit individual requirements, and we can vary the venues.

The sessions are suitable for all levels of runner – all you need to bring is the desire to improve whatever level you are at right now.  If you have any queries, please ask. / 079499 50291

Marathon places
DPR have been offered up to 10 guaranteed places for the 2019 Brighton Marathon which takes place on Sunday 14th April. They cost £75 (which is the general entry price) but as places are now completely sold out this could be a good way of securing a place if you decide to take on the challenge. Please e-mail Juliet Shillingford ( by Saturday 8th December if you would like a place. If more than 10 club members would like places it will go to ballot.

Who wants a freeEdinburgh marathon place?
Sunday 26 May 2019, and according to Runner’s World it’s the UK’s fastest marathon! it’s a flat course in a beautiful city with great support. And an easy, picturesque train ride away. If the full marathon isn’t to your liking, you can form a team of 4 to do it as a relay, or go for the half marathon instead. And if you want to make a family weekend of it, on Saturday 25th there is a 10K and various junior distances to participate in.

The good people at the EMF are offering our club a free place – so get in touch with Lucy Ross who will draw names out of a hat in early December.
