January 2019 Newsletter

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Has everyone made their running resolutions for 2019?  There is plenty in this month’s newsletter to help you keep them.

Up first…

A very good luck to everyone one taking part in the Wildest Peaks Trail Run on 20 January.  And best of luck to everyone in the Peak District if they happen upon the unruly DPR mob whilst they are there!

Upcoming social events

Social events to look forward to in DPR January Social Calendar!

Join us in the Crown and Greyhound, Dulwich, Tuesday 8 January from 8.30pm for monthly post handicap drink. All welcome!

DPR Annual Dinner – Saturday 26 January 2019

The DPR event of 2019! Get your ticket soon via the DPR website for our annual dinner. Cost £10 (£5 for children up to 15 years), which pays for Prosecco or a soft drink on arrival and wine and soft drinks for the table. Please bring a starter, main, side or dessert for a sit down dinner. If you’re bringing a dish to be eaten hot, aim to bring it from the oven. Food can be kept warm but not cooked at the clubhouse.  For planning purposes, please let Anna know what you plan to bring. You can speak with her at the clubhouse over the next few Tuesdays, email annagregorowski21@gmail.com or text 07970 074039. Please bring more of whatever you wish to drink. Formal dress code so please do up.  It is also Burns Night weekend so do wear your tartan if you wish! Everyone who buys a ticket has automatic entry into the club raffle with great prizes to be won (club membership and sports vouchers). Further raffle tickets will be available on the night. Tickets for the dinner are on sale via the DPR website or in person at the clubhouse on Tuesday evenings. Please buy online if you can as it makes it much easier for the committee to manage.  Thank you!

Club Championship Races

The 2019 Half Marathon Club Championship Race will be Paddock Wood on Sunday 7 April. Entries are open now (only £23.00) and will undoubtedly sell out. This is a well organised flat race on roads in the Kent countryside which several club members have done before.  Visit paddockwoodhalfmarathon.co.uk for further information and to sign up.  Something to look forward to in the Spring!

We’ve sadly heard that the much-loved Cabbage Patch 10 will not be run again which means it obviously can’t be our 10 mile Club Championship Race as was planned for 2019.  We will keep you posted regarding an alternative race.

Edinburgh Marathon

The ballot has been drawn for the free entry to the Edinburgh marathon in May. The place goes to Lou Fernandez with Santos Diana in reserve. Congratulations!

Non Club Event Race Recommendations

Tadworth 10 – Entries are now full.

Sunday 6 January at 11.30am. Please check Facebook for travel arrangements if you need a lift or train information.

Bank of England Cross Country Race

We’ve once again been invited to take part in the Bank of England Cross Country Race in Richmond Park on 19 January at 14:30. It’s a 4.9 mile race around the park and as in previous years there will be a tea provided afterwards in the Sports Club which DPR will cover the costs for.  This event is open to all members of the club and is a really lovely afternoon out. Further details will be posted on Facebook nearer the time.

If you’ve enjoyed an event in the past and think other members would too, please let the committee know and we’ll include it in future newsletters.

Ladies Cross Country

A reminder of the remaining fixtures:

9 February @ 1pm – Richmond Park (Kingston end), 8km – CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

2 March @ 11am – Lloyd Park, 8km

The races are open to all female members and we always enjoy tea and homemade cake afterwards! You must wear club kit and we will co-ordinate travel arrangements nearer the time. More details will be sent out the week before each fixture. If you have any questions please email Emma on emmacembleton@yahoo.com.

Men’s Cross Country

We’ve now decided on our final two races of the season.

Next up is the Dash for the Splash! It will be held on 24 February 2019, starting at 9.30am on Wimbledon Common. A really great event that’s cheap (£14) and involves running through a brook in February, what’s not to like? Further details are on the race website http://dashforthesplash.com/index.html

Our final race will be something a bit different, the Medway Megalith Half Marathon on 24 March starting at 10.30am. This is a new race for us but promises hills, gates, stiles and stunning scenery in a friendly low key race. It’s only a small field so it’s advisable to book your place early. Further details are on the race website https://www.hitthetrailrunning.com/

As DPR men aren’t part of a cross-country league it means we go along to public entry trail races for our cross-country fix instead. This means that DPR ladies are very welcome to join us if you want to get in some extra trail running.

Improvers Squad – Thursday Night Session January and February

If you’d like to get involved in the Improvers Squad for the sessions in January and February to get your new year running started please sign up with Susan.  We’ll be concentrating on speed. If you are thinking of joining please make sure that you have been regularily running 18 miles minimum per week over three runs. If you have not quite reached this please chat with Susan anyhow if you are interested in taking part.

In order to get the best out of the sessions, members are asked to sign up for the whole month at a time (though ideally for the 2 months), with an opt-out by text if you are unable to come for one of the sessions, rather than the other way round!  The sessions will be arranged for, and advised to, those who have the intention to commit.  This means that each session can be adapted in advance to suit individual requirements, and we can vary the venues.

The sessions are suitable for all levels of runner – all you need to bring is the desire to improve whatever level you are at right now.  If you have any queries, please ask.  susan.l.smith@live.com / 079499 50291

Marathon training

Anyone who has secured a Spring / London marathon place and who would like help in preparing for and setting out a schedule, please contact Susan. susan.l.smith@live.com / 079499 50291 without delay!!

And finally….

Watch this space for details of two talks coming up: the rearranged sports psychology intro; and one on trail running. These are due to take place at the clubhouse after the usual Tuesday run.

The committee is also hard at work arranging some more sessions with a local personal trainer.  These will be delivered in February and March, we are just trying to pin down exact dates.
