Running with Carrie

We invite you to run with Carrie from the club and back to either the club or the top of Fireman’s Alley. The ideal distance is 4.5-5 miles at about a 12 min/mile pace.Without guides, Carrie is not able to share the joy of running. Please offer your commitment to support Carrie once or twice over the 9 weeks (no matter what your usual pace) so Carrie is confident she has someone to run with.

Ideally 2+ runners sign up each week, who make every effort to commit to run.It would be lovely to have some new volunteers signing up.

Club Championship Races

Our Club Championship 5k race will be held at Dulwich parkrun at 9am on Saturday 17th November.  This will also be the first date of the Winter parkrun ladder giving you a double incentive to get your skates on.  If you’ve never done a parkrun before please visit parkrun.org.uk and register as a new parkrunner, making sure you put Dulwich Park Runners as your club and print off your barcode, bringing it with you on the day.  Also remember your club kit! Medals will be given out at the Quiz Night on Saturday 1st December.

Club Championship Results

On Sunday 14th October we held our 10 Mile Club Championship as part of The Cabbage Patch 10 in Twickenham. The rain almost held off giving us good running conditions for a really lovely run.  Well done to the DPR runners who produced some impressive times including Susan Smith with a near 80% age grading and Martha Brownlow running her first 10 mile race in a very impressive time of 1.21.07 (all times gun to chip).  Full results on the website.  Medals will be given out at the Quiz Night on Saturday 1st December. Wishing all our injured non-runners speedy recoveries and thank you for all your hard work transferring places so that as many people as possible could run.

Non Club Event Race Recommendations

The 2nd Bedgebury Forest Half Marathon & 10k – Sunday 18th November at 9.00am.  The 10k has now sold out but there are still places for this popular half marathon in Kent which uses the undulating forest paths and trails in and around Bedgebury National Forest – register at https://bookitzone.com

The ever-popular Tadworth 10 will be back on Sunday 6th January at Epsom Racecourse to help us see in the New Year. Described as ‘scenic and challenging’ it’s never too early to sign up for this fun 10-miler. https://www.tadworthac.org.uk/tadworth-ten/

If you’ve enjoyed an event in the past and think other members would too, please let the committee know and we’ll include it in future newsletters.

Ladies Cross Country

Well done to the small turnout of six runners who enjoyed balmy October sunshine and delicious home baking at the first fixture on Wimbledon Common on the 13th of October.

The remaining fixtures are as follows:

10th November @ 11am –Nonsuch Park, Cheam, 6km
12th January @ 1pm –Happy Valley, Coulsdon, 8km *CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP*
9th February @ 11am –Richmond Park (Kingston end), 8km

The races are open to all female members and we always enjoy tea and homemade cake afterwards! You must wear club kit and we will co-ordinate travel arrangements nearer the time. More details will be sent out the week before each fixture. If you have any questions please email Emma on emmacembleton@yahoo.com.

Men’s Cross Country

A small but select group made their way to Oxted for the Titsey 10k. Despite the beer running out (before we got to it!), it was still a lovely morning out and a really enjoyable start to the cross country season.

Next up will be the Beckenham 10k race and this will also be the men’s cross country championships race. This will take place on Sunday 11 November at 11:02 (after a two-minute silence). Due to the building works in the park it’s going to be a different course this year and details have yet to be finalised but it will remain wholly in the park and so should still be a really great race. Entry is £12 (with vast amounts of tea and cake after the run included), the race is very close by and thoroughly enjoyed by those who have entered in the past. Further details are on the race website www.beckenhamrunning.co.uk/races/trail.

As DPR men aren’t part of a cross-country league it means we go along to public entry trail races for our cross-country fix instead. This means that DPR ladies are very welcome to join us if you want to get in some extra trail running.

Finally, if anyone knows of any good, close by (and ideally cheap) trail runs December – March please let Paul know as we’re always looking out for new fixtures.

Improvers Squad – Thursday Night Session November/ December

If you’d like to get involved in the Improvers Squad for the sessions in November and December to carry you over the dark winter months please sign up with Susan.  We’ll be concentrating on endurance in preparation for the longer winter races, and it’s a good grounding for anyone planning to start a marathon or half marathon schedule in the New Year. These are longer sessions so those already on the Squad, as well as those thinking of joining really need to make sure that your monthly mileage is up to 18 miles minimum per week over three runs. If you have not quite reached this please chat with Susan anyhow if you are interested in taking part.

In order to get the best out of the sessions, members are asked to sign up for the whole month at a time (though ideally for the 2 months), with an opt-out by text if you are unable to come for one of the sessions, rather than the other way round!  The sessions will be arranged for, and advised to, those who have the intention to commit.  This means that each session can be adapted in advance to suit individual requirements, and we can vary the venues.

The sessions are suitable for all levels of runner – all you need to bring is the desire to improve whatever level you are at right now.  If you have any queries, please ask susan.l.smith@live.com / 079499 50291

Beginners Course

Saturday 3rdNovember sees that last and longest run of the Autumn Beginners course.  As a “Thankyou so much” to everyone who has turned out to help please join us for breakfast in a local cafe after this last session.
