October 2018 newsletter

September highlights and shout-outs

Congratulations to all of the DPRs who completed the Richmond half marathon on September 16th. Special mention to Chinnie and Angie who were completing the distance for the first time!

Sarah Cook ran the Berlin Marathon on September 16th and we wish her well for Chicago on 7th October.

Great fun was had at the Knowle Park annual picnic, with a few hills and plenty of cake!

Save the date – Christmas Trot and Social, Tuesday 18th December, 7.30pm

The club’s annual Christmas party will be on Tuesday 18th December after a short festive run followed by food, mulled wine and soft drinks!

Longer Christmas run – ideas please!

Anna and Lucy are planning a festive club run (Tuesday or Thursday evening or weekend) over the Christmas period. In the past we have run through the Christmassy streets of London (crowded!) and last year opted for a country Christmas alternative, joining Polesden Lacey’s Tinsel 10K (this year Sunday 23rd December). Let Anna or Lucy know if you have any ideas / requests and watch this space for confirmation.

Save the date – DPR Annual Dinner – Saturday 26 January 2019

The first big DPR event of 2019! Save the date and get a ticket early for DPR’s annual dinner at the clubhouse. Cost will be £10 (£5 for children up to 15 years old) which pays for Prosecco on arrival, wine for the table, and soft drinks. More information in the December newsletter, on the website and tickets will be on sale via the website.

A Guided Run in Westminster

Sunday 4th November, meet at 12 noon at Victoria station near platforms 1-6. Led by our very own David Mullany, the run will consist of about 10 interesting stops on a 5 mile route (approx), covering snippets of architecture, history, art, literature and other interesting or intriguing  bits of information.
We shall go at a pace to suit everyone in the group, probably about 10-11 minute miles, and the whole thing will last just over 90 minutes. Followed by late lunch/drink in a pub not far from Victoria station.

The Big Half 2019

We have had more applications for our 15 places in The Big Half than the number of places we have been allocated. We have therefore decided to give priority to full members, who will all receive a place. If you requested a place, Derek Hodgson will email you all with information about how to register and pay in the next week or so.

Talk by Ben Chaabane from Chaabane Sport Psychology

Tuesday October 30th @ 8.30 pm.

Ben is a trainee sports psychologist who would like to introduce himself, his area of psychology and what a psychologist can give to a running club. Please join us in the clubhouse after the usual Tuesday run for a brief, informal talk.

Autumn Beginners Course

Thank you to those who have turned out to help at the first few sessions of this Autumn’s Beginners Course. We really appreciate it and couldn’t do it without you. We hope that you will continue to do so, with the usual reward of breakfast at a local cafe after the last run on 3rd November! By the way, it helps if you wear your club kit both to promote the club and also to identify you as a helper. Any questions please ask Di or Susan.

Summer Parkrun ladder

Thank you to everyone who has participated, either running, walking or volunteering. The results will be the best 9 runs of a possible 12 – the scores will be available soon and the winner announced at the Quiz Night.

Monthly Club Handicap

Come along and enjoy the third-to-last old-style handicap before it all (not really all) changes in 2019. Tuesday October 2nd, with drinks afterwards in the Crown and Greyhound.

Club Championship Races

10 mile

On Sunday 14th October we have our 10 Mile Club Championship Race.  This is the Cabbage Patch 10 which starts in Twickenham.  If you have a place do check out the website www.cabbagepatch10.com for all the important information.  Public transport should be fairly do-able but there is always the option to drive.  We can make travel arrangements on Facebook nearer the time.  Please remember to wear club kit!

5k

As last year our Club Championship 5k race will be Dulwich parkrun.  The date is Saturday 17th November which will also be the first date of the Winter parkrun ladder.

Club Championship Results

On Tuesday 11th September, as the light faded, we held our 1 Mile Club Championship race in Dulwich Park.  Congratulations to all who ran but particularly Will Simpson who won the race, David Mullany who just pipped Will to the highest score after age-grading and Lou Fernandez who came in a very respectable third.

Full results here!

Thank you also to everyone who donated to our collection for St Christopher’s Hospice. We raised £125

Men’s Cross Country

The evenings are getting darker and the baking heat has disappeared (phew!) which means it’s time to dust off your trail shoes and look forward to the men’s cross country races!

First up we have the fantastic Titsey 10k on 7 October at 10:30am. The race is all off road, mainly through wooded paths, the last few kilometres are downhill and there’s a bottle of beer at the end! Entry is only £16 for club members and the race has a really friendly, relaxed atmosphere. There are further details on the race website here: https://oxtedrunners.org.uk/titsey-trail-10k/about-the-course/

Next up will be the Beckenham 10k race and this will also be the men’s cross country championships race. This will take place on Sunday 11 November at 11:02 (after a two-minute silence). Due to the building works in the park it’s going to be a different course this year and details have yet to be finalised but it will remain in the park and so should still be a really great race. Entry is £12 (with vast amounts of tea and cake after the run included), the race is very close by and thoroughly enjoyed by those who have entered in the past. Further details are on the race website here: http://www.beckenhamrunning.co.uk/races/trail

As DPR men aren’t part of a cross-country league it means we go along to public entry trail races for our cross-country fix instead. This means that DPR ladies are very welcome to join us if you want to get in some extra trail running.

Finally, if anyone knows of any good, close by (and ideally cheap) trail runs December – March please let Paul know as we’re always looking out for new fixtures.

Improvers’ Squad – Thursday Night Sessions September / October

If you’d like to get involved in the Improvers Squad for the sessions in November and December to carry you over the dark winter months please sign up with Susan.  In September and October we’ve been working on strength, and next we’ll be concentrating on endurance. These are longer sessions so those already on the Squad as well as those thinking of joining really need to make sure that your monthly mileage is up to 18 miles minimum per week over three runs. If you have not quite reached this please chat with Susan anyhow if you are interested in taking part.

In order to get the best out of the sessions, members are asked to sign up for the whole month at a time (though ideally for the 2 months), with an opt-out by text if you are unable to come for one of the sessions, rather than the other way round!  The sessions will be arranged for, and advised to, those who have the intention to commit.  This means that each session can be adapted in advance to suit individual requirements, and we can vary the venues.

The sessions are suitable for all levels of runner – all you need to bring is the desire to improve whatever level you are at right now.  If you have any queries, please ask.  susan.l.smith@live.com / 079499 50291

Club kit

Please see Anne Cheeseman on Tuesdays if you would like to purchase any club kit.

More info here.

Non Club Event Race Recommendations

The ever-popular Tadworth 10 will be back on Sunday 6th January at Epsom Racecourse to help us see in the New Year. Described as ‘scenic and challenging’ it’s never too early to sign up for this fun 10-miler. https://www.tadworthac.org.uk/tadworth-ten/

If you’ve enjoyed an event in the past and think other members would too, please let the committee know and we’ll include it in future newsletters.

We’ve set up a new page on the website with running events and race recommendations (and offers) for members. You can find it here and we’ll keep adding to it as and when.
