May highlights and shout-outs

Well done to runners and supporters of the Chislehurst Half Marathon on Sunday 20th May.  It was a really lovely course with perfect weather and definitely one to consider next year.

Congratulations to all those who took part in the beautiful but challenging Women Can Marathon in Devon on Sunday 27th May.  We had a relay team of 4 (Joanne, Eszti, Heather and Emma Davidson), two pairs who each took on a half marathon (Laura and Emma Embleton; Anna and Susan) and two who took on the full marathon (Linda and Lucy) plus a fantastic support team who were invaluable.  A great time was had by all, camping under the stars (and the thunder and lightning).  Thank you to all those who helped organise a fantastic weekend away.

Big well done to Sophie who was an official pacer at the Hackney Half, and congratulations to Felice who completed the Vitality 10k.

Read on… for more info about the summer Parkrun ladder, summer league, a chance to have your say about what we could / should organise in terms of topics for talks and training, improvers sessions in June and how to get your mitts on some new club kit (or even some older kit at a bargain price). Not to mention those all-important dates for your diary and the upcoming social events.

Summer Parkrun ladder

This works on a ‘best nine of twelve’ system, and members are automatically included in the ladder as long as they nominate Dulwich Park Runners as their club on their parkrun profile (or let Gillian Cavell know if they are 2nd claim members). The Summer ladder starts on Saturday 16 June and runs till 1 September. Points are awarded as follows:

10 points for running

10 extra points for a PB

5 extra points for first-time-at-any-parkrun

Bonus points on various weeks (see Facebook page and newsletters)

Each week’s DPR results are ranked according to age-grade percentage and extra points awarded to the top 4 runners, with everyone else receiving one point:  5,4,3,2,1,1,1 …

20 points for volunteering (only one counts in the 9 best)

Summer League

Summer League is a series of four-to-five friendly running events held by a group of nine like-minded London running clubs each summer.

Each fixture consists of:

  • An all-abilities 5 mile or 10K race for adults (ages 15+).
  • A fun run aimed at children under 6.
  • A 1-mile Tenderfoot race aimed at 6–14 year olds.
  • Relay races. Each leg is about 300-400m long. There are races for men’s, women’s and mixed teams. Adults and children compete together.
  • A picnic provided by the host club.

Runners of all speeds and abilities are encouraged to participate.  Clubs receive points for every runner who finishes, with bonus points being awarded for those in the higher age bands, and for children under 13 in the Tenderfoot race.  In the relays extra points are awarded for mixed age teams.

These events are always enormous fun, and supporters are welcome.  Bring the family along and make a day of it! See below for dates and please can everyone start thinking about running and/or helping or marshalling for our race on 1st July, as well as inviting friends and family to help? Please let Paula McMahon know if you are coming and can offer help.

The first Summer League fixture is on 3rd June, at Perivale.  Details are as follows:

Ealing Southall & Middlesex A.C. with the Ealing Eagles

Summer league 5 mile – Ealing host fixture

10:00 – Sunday 03 June 2018

Perivale Park, Ealing

Race times:

Open Race (5M) – 10:00

Tenderfoot (1,500m approx) – 11:05

400m Fun Run – 11:20

Relays – 12:00

Course: The 5 mile open race is a 2-lap course on roads and paths in and around Perivale Park. The course is flat, mainly on footpaths. The Tenderfoot and relays will take place entirely within the park.

We are aiming to make this year’s Summer League as ‘single-use-plastic free’ as we possibly can.  Cups and water will always be provided, but if you are happy to run with your own cup/bottle and have it refilled at the water stations, rather than using a new cup each time, that would be a good way to make a difference.  Many of us have our own collapsible or soft cups which would be excellent as they can be tucked into a pocket before/after use – if you would like to know more about these let me know. Please also bring your own tub/plate for food – Ealing have decided that they will not be providing plates this year.

Summer League relays

As preparation for these events it would be REALLY useful if you’d fit in a timed 300 metres during your Tuesday run some time in May and email the results and your age to susan.l.smith@live.com or text 07949950291 so I’ll have some idea where to start to fit together the best ever relay teams. Those who’ve done it before know that speed is not necessarily key! Numbers count for lots!! You can do it on Dulwich College track so long as no-one else is using it, or just measure it out on a flat bit in Dulwich Park. Thank you for your help.

Summer BBQ and races: Tuesday June 19th

Come along to the DPR BBQ and team relay races: this is an evening of fun, feasting and general hilarity! The club provides the main BBQ (with meat, veggie and vegan options) plus soft drinks. Members just need to bring themselves, and maybe a side dish or pudding to share, and some beer / wine / other beverages of choice. Please get in touch with Anna Gregorowski about what to bring if you’re not sure: annagregorowski21@gmail.com/ 07970074039. Cross your fingers for better weather than last year (even though the rain didn’t dampen our spirits!). With Paul as our master BBQ chef, and Susan our race organiser extraordinaire, we’re in for a treat. Not to be missed!

What do YOU want to know?

Following on from feedback earlier in the year we’re looking at arranging some talks and/or conditioning sessions.  Before we go any further it would be great to get suggestions for topics that you would be interested in learning more about or areas of training that you think you are missing out on e.g. nutrition for runners, strength exercises specific to trail running or how to avoid injury.  If you have any suggestions please email them to Sarah Cook (secook79@hotmail.co.uk) or Clare Dunne (clare_a_dunne@hotmail.com).

Club Championship Races

10k

The next club championship race will be the 10k, which will also be the second Summer League fixture at Headstone Manor Park, North Harrow on Sunday 17thJune. This is a new venue for this Club Race so put it in your diaries now.

1 Mile

The 1 mile race will be held during our regular Tuesday club session on 10 July and will be one lap of Dulwich Park. There will be a charity collection in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice in memory of past club members. To reward your efforts this will be followed by a trip to the Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village.

10 Mile

For this year’s 10 mile race we are returning to the Cabbage Patch 10 which is being held on Sunday 14thOctober. This is a fast, flat course around Twickenham that we’ve done many times in the past. It is a very popular race and has already sold out.  We have over 20 runners already entered. There are sure to be other people who will want places so if you have a place and, for whatever reason, find that you are unable to do the race please let us know as places are transferable until a couple of weeks before the race.  https://www.cabbagepatch10.com/

Club Championship Results

All club results are on the website. We didn’t have any club champs in May, but plenty coming up (see above)!

Improvers’ Squad – Thursday Night Sessions

If you’d like to join the Improvers Squad for June, please sign up with Susan Smith.  We’ll be working on speed to get you ready for the mile champs and the summer league 5 miles/10ks and relays, so some hard work is involved!

In order to get the best out of the sessions, members are asked to sign up for the whole month. There is an opt-out by text if you are unable to come for one of the sessions, but you’d better have a really good reason! The sessions will be arranged for, and advised to, those who have the intention to commit.  This means that each session can be adapted in advance to suit individual requirements, and we can vary the venues.

The sessions are suitable for all levels of runner – all you need to bring is the desire to improve whatever level you are at right now. The general advice is that you should have been running at least 3 times a week for several months in order to maximise the benefit, i.e. over 15 miles per week, and be ready to increase this. If you are not sure please chat with Susan. If you have any queries, please ask. susan.l.smith@live.com /07949 950 291.

Non Club Event Race Recommendations

As well as the club races, DPR members do a raft of other events near and far and there are some really great events coming up:

  • The Dinosaur Dash Relay Race is on Wednesday 13th June at 7.30pm.  This is a really fun relay race around the dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park, hosted by Crystal Palace Fun Runners.  Put together a male, female or mixed team of three, enter online by 2pm on the day, £15 per team with all proceeds going to local charities. Each team member runs a 3km lap. Undoubtedly there will be a trip to the pub afterwards! co.uk/dino-dash-relay

  • Eridge Park 10 Trail Challenge, 9 September– a few of us did this race last year and absolutely loved it. The course is a hilly, muddy route through a normally closed country park near Tunbridge Wells and is basically the perfect trail run in the eyes of your new Chair! It’s definitely not a race to go for a PB, but the atmosphere beforehand and during the race is brilliant, finishers get a (non-technical) t-shirt, free beer on tap and to all intents and purposes an unlimited amount of cake at the end. What more could you want? Race entry is £17 and details are on the race website: http://www.twharriers.org.uk/eridge-10-run/

  • Richmond Half Marathon, 16 September – a couple of members entered this event last year (both the half and the full marathon) and after their ringing endorsements they have persuaded a load more of us to enter the event this year. Starting in Kew Gardens the course then carries on along the river for almost its entire length, finishing in Richmond Old Deer Park and finishers receive arguably the best technical race t-shirt going and also get a free beer! (A theme may be emerging). There are charity places still available if anyone is keen to enter.

If you’ve enjoyed an event in the past and think other members would too, please let the committee know and we’ll include it in future newsletters.
