April Highlights and shout-outs

Well done to everyone who took part in our 5 mile CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP race in Victoria Park on April 14th. Results are now on the website – see the Club Championshipspage for all of our latest results.

April was also all about MARATHONS – huge congratulations to everyone who took on the Brighton and London marathons this year. There are some great photos on our Facebook page so do take a look – Claire Green had the smiliest Brighton marathon ever; according to her Facebook post Mel Greer-Walker casually nipped off to the seaside for the day and took a marathon in her stride; Anna Bettiss, Tabitha Lewis, Emma Davidson, Will Simpson, Kavita Raj and Clara Lawes all battled the hottest London marathon ever and showed it who was boss! Too many DPRs to list marshalled the course, organised beautifully by Natalie Villiers. Well done everyone!

The marathon runners benefitted from complimentary massages thanks to DPR and the Vale Practice of East Dulwich. It was great to see so many runners, marshals and other supporters at Bar EV on the day of VLM and Tuesday afterwards at the clubhouse for a post-marathon celebration!  Thank you one and all.

Read on…

for more info about the spring beginners course, summer league, improvers sessions in May and June and how to get your mitts on some shiny new club kit (or even some older kit at a bargain price). Not to mention those all-important dates for your diary, the upcoming social events and a bit of info on the monthly club handicap race for those who haven’t tried it before.

The Spring 2018 DPR Beginners Course

Many thanks to those (35 so far) who have turned out on Saturday mornings to help with the Spring Beginners Course. There are 2 more weeks to go, and then we’ll be asking you to welcome some of them into DPR as members. A thank you breakfast for helpers at a local cafe is after the final and longest run on May 12th.

Summer League

Summer League is a series of four-to-five friendly running events held by a group of nine like-minded London running clubs each summer.

Each fixture consists of:

  • An all-abilities 5 mile or 10K race for adults (ages 15+).
  • A fun run aimed at children under 6.
  • A 1-mile Tenderfoot race aimed at 6–14 year olds.
  • Relay races. Each leg is about 300-400m long. There are races for men’s, women’s and mixed teams. Adults and children compete together.
  • A picnic provided by the host club.

Runners of all speeds and abilities are encouraged to participate.  Clubs receive points for every runner who finishes, with bonus points being awarded for those in the higher age bands, and for children under 13 in the Tenderfoot race.  In the relays extra points are awarded for mixed age teams.

These events are always enormous fun, and supporters are welcome.  Bring the family along and make a day of it! See below for dates and please can everyone start thinking about running and/or helping or marshalling for our race on 1st July, as well as inviting friends and family to help? Please let Paula McMahon know if you are coming and can offer help.

Summer League relays

As preparation for these events it would be REALLY, REALLY useful if you’d fit in a timed 300 metres during your Tuesday run some time in May and email the results and your age to susan.l.smith@live.com or text 07949950291 so I’ll have some idea where to start to fit together the best ever relay teams. Those who’ve done it before know that speed is not necessarily key! Numbers count for lots!! You can do it on Dulwich College track so long as no-one else is using it, or just measure it out on a flat bit in Dulwich Park. Thank you for your help.

Summer BBQ and races: June 19th

Come along to the DPR BBQ and team relay races with a challenging twist! This is an evening of fun, feasting and general hilarity! Bring a side dish or pudding to share and cross your fingers for better weather than last year (even though the rain did not dampen our spirits!). With Paul as our master BBQ chef, and Susan our race organiser extraordinaire, we’re in for a treat. Not to be missed!

Club Championship Races

10k

The next club championship race will be the 10k, which will also be the second Summer League fixture at Headstone Manor Park, North Harrow on Sunday 17thJune. This is a new venue for this Club Race so put it in your diaries now.

1 Mile

The 1 mile race will be held during our regular Tuesday club session on 10 July and will be one lap of Dulwich Park. To reward your efforts this will be followed by a trip to the Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village.

10 Mile

For this year’s 10 mile race we are returning to the Cabbage Patch 10 which is being held on Sunday 14thOctober. This is a fast, flat course around Twickenham that we’ve done many times in the past. It is a very popular race and has already sold out.  We have over 20 runners already entered. There are sure to be other people who will want places so if you have a place and, for whatever reason, find that you are unable to do the race please let us know as places are transferable until a couple of weeks before the race.  https://www.cabbagepatch10.com/

Club Championship Results

The second of this year’s club championships was the Victoria Park Open 5 Miles on Saturday 14thApril.  The weather was gorgeous and we enjoyed a picnic and a visit to a local bar.

The club results are on the website. The top 6 runners, ranked by their age-graded result, have received a medal. Well done to all, but a special mention must go to Susan Smith for obtaining a new DPR club record and winning the race VF60 category in a blistering 38:17 (age-graded result of 83.78%)!

Monthly club handicap race

The handicap is a timed 2.1 mile race that takes place on the first Tuesday of the month. The idea is that it is a chance for you to try to improve your speed each month over this unusual distance, and also offers the opportunity for everyone running to have the same chance of winning. This is because everyone starts at a different time (their handicap time) depending on their predicted speed, with the theory on paper at least that all runners finish together. Of course, in practice, this never happens as conditions vary, as well as runners’ legs.

The route takes you around the outside of Dulwich park on the roads – Lordship Lane, Court Lane, Dulwich Village, Dulwich Common – and the race takes place come rain, snow or shine. There are points to be won for winning, running a PB and simply taking part, and you may even earn a trophy.

To sign up just turn up at the club house, make your way to the handicap table and give your name to (usually) Clare Dunne, Katy Denny or Eszti Takacs. Then join us for a drink at The Crown and Greyhound (‘The Dog’) in Dulwich Village afterwards.

Improvers’ Squad – Thursday Night Sessions

If you’d like to join the Improvers Squad for May and June, please sign up with Susan Smith.  We’ll be working on speed to get you ready for the mile champs and the summer league 5 miles/10ks and relays, so some hard work is involved!

In order to get the best out of the sessions, members are asked to sign up for the whole two months at a time. There is an opt-out by text if you are unable to come for one of the sessions, but you’d better have a really good reason!  The sessions will be arranged for, and advised to, those who have the intention to commit.  This means that each session can be adapted in advance to suit individual requirements, and we can vary the venues.

The sessions are suitable for all levels of runner – all you need to bring is the desire to improve whatever level you are at right now.  The general advice is that you should be running at least 3 times a week in order to maximise the benefit, i.e. over 15 miles per week, and be ready to increase this.  If you are not sureplease chat with Susan.  If you have any queries, please ask.  susan.l.smith@live.com/ 07949 950 291.

Race Recommendations

As well as the club races, DPR members do a raft of other events near and far and there are some really great events coming up:

  • Chislehurst Half Marathon, 20 May – a new find, this undulating half marathon looks like it will be a lovely morning out, is nice and close by, and only costs £20 to enter. Entries close on 14 May and further details are on the race website: http://www.chislehursthalf.org.uk/

  • The WomenCan marathon/half marathon is on Sunday 27 May.  You can find out more at https://www.womencan.co.ukand chat with Linda, Susan and Laura about a co-ordinated but self-arranged weekend camping trip. There are also more details on the DPR Facebook page. Laura, Emma, Johanna, Anna and Susan are planning to run the half marathon (so one more partner currently needed for the half marathon relay), and Linda is tackling 26.2 hilly marathon miles. If you prefer a shorter distance and are able to round up three fellow runners, it is also possible to run a four person relay with individual legs of between 6 and 7 miles.

  • Eridge Park 10 Trail Challenge, 9 September – a few of us did this race last year and absolutely loved it. The course is a hilly, muddy route through a normally closed country park near Tunbridge Wells and is basically the perfect trail run in the eyes of your new Chair! It’s definitely not a race to go for a PB, but the atmosphere beforehand and during the race is brilliant, finishers get a (non-technical) t-shirt, free beer on tap and to all intents and purposes an unlimited amount of cake at the end. What more could you want?Race entry is £17 and details are on the race website: http://www.twharriers.org.uk/eridge-10-run/

  • Richmond Half Marathon, 16 September – a couple of members entered this event last year (both the half and the full marathon) and after their ringing endorsements they have persuaded a load more of us to enter the event this year. Starting in Kew Gardens the course then carries on along the river for almost its entire length, finishing in Richmond Old Deer Park and finishers receive arguably the best technical race t-shirt going and also get a free beer! (A theme may be emerging). Entry costs £35 and further details are on the race website: https://www.richmondrunningfestival.com/register/

If you’ve enjoyed an event in the past and think other members would too please let the committee know and we’ll include it in future newsletters.
