DPR Annual General Meeting
The DPR AGM will take place on 21 March at 8.00pm and we hope all members will attend. An official notification was sent to all members by email on Friday 24 February. All the committee posts are open for election but the roles that are certain to become vacant are Social Secretary, Treasurer and one ‘Other’ post. If you are interested in these or any of the committee roles, please speak to a committee member who will be delighted to tell you more about the different responsibilities. The official notification gives details of how to make a nomination to stand. The committee posts are as follows:

* Chair
* Communications Secretary
* Treasurer
* Membership Secretary
* Stock Secretary
* Club Secretary
* Race Secretary
* Social Secretary
* 2 x Other Members (Other Members take on tasks that do not fit within other roles or help out generally)

Please consider taking on a role, as without members being willing to stand on the committee, we cannot run as a club. You may also like an issue to be discussed at the AGM – the official notification of the AGM invites submissions for agenda items.

Grand Union Half Marathon (and Club Championship Race) – Sunday 9 April
For this year’s half marathon club championship race we’ll be using the Grand Union race which is holding an extra event on 9 April to celebrate the race’s 10 year anniversary. This is a scenic race running between Uxbridge and Watford along the canal and finishes in Cassiobury Park which will be a lovely spot for an after race picnic. The race caters to all abilities and DPR members who have done it in the past have really enjoyed it.

As it’s a one off event it’s a good idea to book your place early as it will probably sell out – details can be found on the race website.

DPR 10 Mile Club Championship Race
For this year’s 10 mile club championship race we’ll be going back to the Cabbage Patch 10. The race will be held on 15 October 2017 and entries are open now. Further details are on the race website:
This is a popular race so it’s a good idea to sign up early if you’re thinking of entering the race.

Summer League 2017
The Summer League is a series of four-to-five friendly fixtures held by a group of eight like-minded London running clubs each summer. We compete for the Summer League trophy, which we have won several times in previous years. Each fixture consists of an all-abilities 5 mile or 10km race for adults (ages 15+); a fun run aimed at children under 6; a ‘tenderfoot race’ aimed at 6–14 year olds; relay races in which each leg is about 300-400m long and a picnic provided by the host club. More details are available here: Provisional dates for this year’s competition are:

Date Location Distance Host Club
4 June Gunnersbury Park, Ealing 10km Ealing Eagles
18 June Headstone Manor Park, Harrow 10km Metros
2 July Dulwich Park 5 miles DPR*
16 or 23 July Regents Park 10km Mornington Chasers
20 August Battersea Park 10km Serpentine

* We are hosting this fixture and volunteers will be required to help marshal the course.

We are looking for someone to take over organising our participation in the Summer League. Please speak to Jo Hepworth if you are interested or would like more information.

Beginners Course
The Spring 2017 course starts on Saturday 25 March and lasts for 8 weeks. If you know anyone who would like to join please ask them to look at the Beginners page on the club website. If you are available to help on any of the Saturdays or would like more information on what is required, please chat with Di or Susan. It’s useful if you can wear club kit, or a white top, so helpers who don’t get to the club very often can distinguish each other from beginners. As usual there will be a thank you breakfast for all helpers at the end of the course!

London Marathon Marshalling Opportunity – Sunday 23 April
DPR have again been given the opportunity to provide marshals for the London marathon. Marshalling places are open to all club members. Partners, friends etc can also be considered. We usually marshal the route on The Highway, between miles 13-14 and miles 21-22.

This is a great way to be part of the London marathon and by marshalling in 2017 DPR members will have a chance to win a place in the 2018 London marathon – our marshalling efforts usually earn us 4 places, which will be allocated by ballot among the DPR members in the marshalling team. You will also get free travel, a t-shirt, cap, lunch, some snacks and a medal!

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Natalie Villiers on (please put “London Marathon Marshals 2017” in the subject line, and give your full name, contact number (preferably mobile), email address, and note whether you are First Aid qualified). Alternatively, you can register your interest by responding to Natalie’s post on Facebook.

Non Club Event Race Recommendations
Many DPR members do races outside the club calendar so this section lists up and coming runs that others might be interested in. If you have a favourite race and would like to share it with the rest of the club, or have entered an event that others might like to take part in, please email Harriet ( with some information about it, and a link to the details. Some Dulwich Park Runners are taking part in the following events:

• There’s a great swim/run event called The Swimmer Classic which takes place on 11 March. This is a relaxed half marathon journey from north to south through London’s finest pools, ponds and parks from Hampstead to Brockwell Lido.
• The Official Hampton Court Palace Half on 19 March
• Finally, looking ahead to warmer days, on 10 September there is the truly wonderful Surrey Bacchus Half which takes place at Denbies vineyard in Dorking, in which many runners wear fancy dress and there are wine stops!

Improvers Squad – Thursdays in March and April
Having worked on endurance we now look at strength training in March and April. This will form a good base for anyone looking to improve their times over distance. Please sign up with Susan.

In order to get the best out of the sessions, members are asked to sign up for a whole month at a time, with an opt-out by text if you are unable to come for one of the sessions, rather than the other way round! The sessions will be arranged for, and advised to, those who have the intention to commit. This means that each can be adapted in advance to suit individual requirements, and we can vary the venues.

The sessions are suitable for all levels of runner – all you need to bring is the desire to improve whatever level you are at right now. The general advice is that people should be running at least three times a week in order to maximise the benefit, i.e. over 15 miles per week, but if you have not quite reached this please chat with Susan anyhow if you are interested in taking part. If you have any queries, please ask. / 079499 50291

Guide Runners
Some of you may remember a couple of years ago that we had a meeting to try to recruit more people to act as guides to run with Carrie on Tuesday evenings. Since then, there have been quite a few new people who have joined the club and would also be willing to act as guide runners but feel a bit nervous about doing this. Carrie is planning to hold an informal meeting at the club after the handicap race in March and it would be good to see anyone who is interested in finding out a bit more there. Carrie will just explain what she finds helpful, what you’d have to do as a guide and there will be an opportunity to ask any questions you might have.
The meeting will take place in the clubhouse at around 8.45pm and as an extra incentive to come along, she will bake a cake.

Dates for 2017 are Thursdays 23 March and 20 April, starting at 8.00pm. The sessions are free for DPR members. Improvers Squad will move to 7.00pm those days so that runners can attend both sessions.

DPR Social Events
There are a number of social events throughout the club year. If members have suggestions for other social events or would like to get involved with organising these, please contact Laura Griffin, Social Secretary. All ideas and support are welcome!
